How we compared these dog walking apps

We compared five apps available in the US iPhone App Store by the job each one helps an owner do: maintain a routine, coordinate care, record a walk from a watch, support a charity or find a trail.

A route map answers where you went. A shared care log answers whether someone already took the dog out. A trail guide answers where you could go next. Those are different questions, even when all three apps appear in a search for dog walking.

Our recommendations are judgments about fit, based on the publishers’ current App Store descriptions and our own product documentation. We have not measured these apps against one another for GPS accuracy, battery use, reliability or ease of use. We do not award scores or treat an unmentioned feature as an absent feature.

The comparison covers apps for people walking their own dogs. It does not compare marketplaces for hiring a dog walker, and a phone route tracker should not be confused with a collar-mounted lost-dog tracker.

1. GetWalkBuddy: our pick for building a daily walking routine

Choose GetWalkBuddy if you want a record of your walks plus a reason to come back tomorrow: XP, levels, streaks, daily quests and achievement badges.

Picture the ordinary neighborhood loop you already know. You do not need a new trail every day. You want to start the walk, keep a record and see the small outings add up. That is the need GetWalkBuddy is built around.

The app combines GPS walk tracking and walk history with an AI-generated dog avatar and in-app progress. Share cards give you a way to save or share a walk. The appeal is a visible routine, rather than a competition to cover the most ground.

There are two practical details to know before downloading. The current App Store name is MyWalkBuddy; follow our link to app ID 6759874545. The current release tracks walks while the app is open and in use. Do not choose it on the assumption that it will record with the app closed.

It is free to download, but the App Store description lists unlimited tracked walks and full history under paid access. Weekly, monthly, yearly and lifetime options are listed; eligible subscription plans may include a trial. Check the price, trial eligibility and renewal terms shown before purchase.

Who should look elsewhere? If your deciding requirement is a shared feeding-and-medication log, Apple Watch recording or trail discovery, start with the relevant alternative below. Those are different purchasing priorities from the daily walking habit we focus on.

2. DogLog: for keeping caregivers on the same page

Choose DogLog when the question is “Has someone already walked, fed or cared for the dog?” Its published features center on shared pet-care records.

In a household with several caregivers, the walk is one entry in a bigger day. DogLog lets owners form a shared Pack and log activities such as walks, meals, water, toilet breaks and medication. Its listing also describes reminders, activity notifications, comments, photos and data export.

That makes it worth considering when coordination matters more to you than earning walking rewards. A partner, sitter or walker can contribute to the same care record instead of leaving the next person to guess.

Before choosing, check which sharing and export features are included in the current offer. A care-log entry also should not be assumed to contain a recorded GPS route; confirm the exact walk-recording behavior if mapping is essential to you.

3. Woof!: for recording walks from Apple Watch

Choose Woof! if starting and tracking a dog walk from your wrist is an important part of your routine.

The Woof! listing explicitly describes recording walks on iPhone and Apple Watch. It lists distance, duration, pace, routes and walk history, along with sharing dogs and walks with family members.

That combination is useful to investigate when more than one person walks the dog and you want watch-based recording. It puts a different buying question first: how do you want to start and review the walk?

Check the current device requirements and in-app offer before subscribing. In particular, confirm whether the watch workflow you want needs your iPhone nearby. We did not test independent watch recording or compare its GPS accuracy with GetWalkBuddy.

4. WoofTrax: for walks that support animal charities

Choose WoofTrax if helping an animal shelter or rescue is the extra reason that makes you want to record a walk.

WoofTrax describes route mapping, walking goals, past walks, walking groups and challenges connected to support for animal charities. The distinctive reason to consider it is the connection between an everyday outing and a cause you care about.

If supporting your chosen rescue means more to you than collecting in-app achievements, that is a sensible basis for choosing your walking app. You can check the current charity program and available challenges before committing to the routine.

Do not interpret recorded miles as a guaranteed fixed donation amount. Check the current program rules and whether your preferred charity is eligible; the App Store description alone does not establish a universal amount earned per walk.

5. AllTrails: for finding dog-friendly places to walk

Choose AllTrails when your main question is “Where can we go?” rather than “How do I record our usual loop?”

AllTrails describes dog-friendly trail discovery, trail information, reviews, navigation and activity recording. It is worth considering for a weekend outing somewhere unfamiliar, especially when you want to compare possible routes before leaving home.

AllTrails offers a free download alongside paid plans. Offline maps are listed under AllTrails Plus, while Peak adds tools such as custom route creation. Check which plan contains the feature you need; a free download is not a promise of free offline navigation.

Treat a dog-friendly listing as a starting point for planning. Check the land manager’s current dog and leash rules before setting out. A route that allows dogs still needs to suit your particular dog and the conditions that day.

Pick the app for tomorrow’s walk

Choose the app that solves the problem you already have. A useful record of an ordinary walk is worth more than a feature list you never use.

Before you download, finish this sentence: “I want this app to help me…” If the answer is stick to a walking routine, start with GetWalkBuddy. If it is coordinate care, start with DogLog. If it is record from my watch, investigate Woof!. If it is support a shelter, explore WoofTrax. If it is find a new trail, explore AllTrails.

Then check three things: whether your device is supported, what access will cost and how recording works while you are outside. If a trial is offered, use it to try the actual workflow that matters to you. Do not assume a feature is included just because the app is free to download.

You can also use our free website tools to plan a week before choosing an app. The weekly dog-walking planner and exercise calculator are linked below. They are separate from paid access inside the iPhone app.

Questions owners ask when the leash is already in their hand

  • Which dog walking app is best for iPhone?

It depends on the job. Our editorial picks are GetWalkBuddy for routine building, DogLog for shared care, Woof! for Apple Watch walks, WoofTrax for charity-linked walking and AllTrails for trail discovery. We publish GetWalkBuddy, and these are feature-fit recommendations rather than measured performance rankings.

  • Is GetWalkBuddy the same app as MyWalkBuddy?

GetWalkBuddy is the website brand. As checked on October 20, 2026, our linked US App Store listing is named MyWalkBuddy, app ID 6759874545.

  • Is GetWalkBuddy free?

The download is free. The current listing places unlimited tracked walks and full history under paid access. Check the available plans, trial eligibility and renewal terms in the purchase flow.

  • Does GetWalkBuddy track with the app closed?

The current release tracks walks while the app is open and in use. Choose based on that limitation, rather than assuming background recording.

  • Can a dog walking app find a lost dog?

Recording your phone’s walking route does not establish the location of a dog that is no longer with you. This guide does not evaluate dedicated pet-tracking hardware.

Make tomorrow’s walk one you can look back on.

If a visible walking routine is what you want, explore GetWalkBuddy. Find MyWalkBuddy in the App Store, check the access terms, and record your next walk with the app open.
